Telugu: 3rd Most Popular Indian Language in US

Telugu is said to be the third most spoken Indian language in the United States. According to a survey released by US Census Bureau, Telugu language stood at third place in the popular Indian languages in the US. While Hindi stood at No.1, Gujarati was ranked No.2.

Interestingly, percentage-wise, the Telugu-speaking crowd grew highest compared to any other Indian language between 2010 and 2018. As per the stats, the number of Telugu-speaking individuals rose 79.5 percent between 2010 and 2018 thus Telugus have outstripped speakers of the other Indian languages.

Whereas, the Hindi speaking population grew only by 43.5 percentage. Bengali-speaking population recorded a rise of 68 percent i.e next to Telugu-speaking population. Meanwhile, Tamil speakers increased at 67.5 percent. These are the figures from The American Community Survey (ACS) for 2018 which was conducted by the US Census Bureau.

As per the numbers, Hindi population is said to be 8.74 lakh speakers as of July 1, 2018. Compared to 2017, this is 1.3 percent increase. Between 2010 to 2018, i.e an 8-year-period, Hindi population in US is increased by 2.65 lakh, a rise of 43.5 percent.

US Census Bureau reveals that 67.3 million residents in the US aged over five (which includes native-born, legal and illegal immigrants) does not speak English at home and speak other language at home.
