An Indian American couple has been forced out of their house after a case was registered against them accusing their autistic son of creating “public nuisance”, according to a newspaper report.The lawsuit, filed last summer by two couples who lived in homes that flanked the Indian-origin couple’s house, alleges that the boy’s disruptive behavior also created an “as-yet unquantified chilling effect on the otherwise ‘hot’ local real estate market,” reported The San Jose Mercury News.
The neighbors had complained that the couple’s young son with autism was pulling children’s hair, biting a woman and other menacing behavior.Vidyut Gopal, an engineer at a Silicon Valley company and his wife Parul Agrawal, a research scientist at Nasa Ames Research Center, have said that they have done everything to cure their son’s problem.The couple had lived in their home in California’s Sunnyvale city for the last seven years and now their ousting has sparked outrage among parents of children with autism, raising troubling questions about how to coexist with neighbors with special needs kids, the report said.
“This has been pretty devastating for us, but we are doing our best to cope with it,” Gopal was quoted as saying.The couple, who are fighting a legal battle, have said that “they have lost hope of returning to their former home, which they now rent to another family”.
