What A Moment: Tollywood Leads Bollywood
If we roll back a few years, there was once a time when Bollywood was the leading film industry in India. The Hindi cinema used to dominate all of Indian cinema with the highest share of revenues and box office potential.
Today the wave has changed completely in favour of the Telugu film industry. In fact, Tollywood has now started to lead over Bollywood when it comes to share box office prospects.
The Telugu film industry now has four films that have collected over ₹1000 crore gross at the global box office. In comparison to that, Bollywood only has three films in this coveted bracket.
While Tollywood has Kalki, Baahubali 2, RRR, and Pushpa 2 in this 1000 crore group, Bollywood has Jawaan, Pathan, and Dangal on the list.
From being labelled as an industry which can only make substandard commercial films, Tollywood has now scaled so very high that even Bollywood is looking smaller in front of us. The very fact that Telugu cinema has more ₹1000 crore grossers than Bollywood speaks for itself.
While Bollywood is struggling to deliver consecutive hits and entertain their audience, this wide is being a brilliantly filled by Telugu Cinema. The mad reception for Pushpa 2 at the Hindi box office can be seen as a testament for the same.
Though Tollywood and Bollywood are going neck to neck in this race, the Telugu film industry is marginally ahead of Hindi in terms of volume. On the other hand, we have Tamil film industry which is yet to have its entry in this reputed thousand crore group.
